Gratitude is a fantastic gift that we can offer ourselves every day and as often as we deem necessary. It perks us right up when we are feeling down, and especially after reading or watching the ghastly news. That is a perfect time to say I am so grateful that I am doing well.
Being grateful is particularly relevant when we are in financial difficulties. We tend not to see the forest for the trees which makes taking action to change the situation extremely difficult. The resistance that abides within us when it comes to dealing with financially scary situations is very strong. It would be more manageable if broken down as follows:
- Clear out the crap in your head – those defeatist, angry and resentful thoughts – and centre yourself with meditation, relaxation, exercise, music – whatever works for you.
- Set a date and time to review your financial problems and stick to it.
- Think about how you would like the situation to be resolved and write it down. Keep it brief and concise and put it away somewhere.
- Get all your financial papers together.
- List your debts and add them up.
- Total your income.
- List all necessary monthly or bi-weekly expenditure.
- Cross out the non-essentials from your planned expenditure. It is easier if you make a List of Needs and Wants, and be brutal. For instance, soda on your grocery list is a want, not a need. Drink water instead.
- Everything on your Wants List must be removed from your planned expenditure.
- Subtract your debt from your monthly income.
- And finally, subtract your planned expenditure – total of your Needs List – from the balance of real income after debt payment. If you are lucky, you will break even but more than likely you will be in the red.
- Now that you have the complete picture, is what you wrote in item three still congruent. If not, rewrite it and tuck it away again.
Now, I am sure you are wondering what this has to do with gratitude. This is where gratitude sells, you see. It is at this very moment that you offer gratitude for being able to accept responsibility for the financial mess you created. Be thankful - think it or say it out loud - for your courage and ability to sort out the crap and get clear on where you stand and what you truly need. Pat yourself on the back; this is huge!
Gratitude Sells Itself
Be grateful for your wealth of intellect and the possibilities that are now bubbling up because you have regained your senses. You are alive and well and have clarity of purpose once more. Say “thank you”. Gratitude sells itself. Despite those red figures staring you in the face, you feel strangely positive. That is because you conquered your fear of the unknown, and that is very good. Be grateful for the little positive things that are happening in your life and expect more of them.
When your life’s journey is less bumpy and your financial woes are consistently diminishing, find that piece of paper you tucked away for safe keeping, and re-read it. You will be very pleasantly surprised at what you find.
